A first for UK government: a fully cloud-based mobile device service
65% licence discount, 30% lower support costs
The challenge
Three agencies needed a single, secure way to manage mobile devices for over 20,000 users, delivered as an outsourced managed service, as they replaced BlackBerrys with iPhones.
What I did
- Ran the vendor review and recommended a proof of concept, then a live pilot (VMware AirWatch, Azure hosting, cloud identity management, VPN to back-end systems).
- Worked with security on penetration testing and approval.
- Gathered and agreed requirements across all three agencies.
- Wrote the business case with a full five-year budget.
- Led the G-Cloud procurement and cost negotiations, and put contracts in place for all three agencies.
- Managed implementation and ITIL service transition with two third parties.
The outcome
- Negotiated a 65% discount on licence fees.
- Delivered a 30% reduction in support costs.
- Over 20,000 users on the first fully cloud-based AirWatch service in UK government, with a total project value over £2.5m.
What this shows
Rolling new technology out to 20,000 people across three organisations is the same challenge as enterprise AI adoption.
