A cloud and IoT telemetry service for 5,500 sites

Over £5m project value, projected yearly saving of over 30%

The challenge

The regulator's national telemetry service collects weather and flood data from more than 5,500 field sites across England. It needed a modern, resilient way to collect that data.

What I did

  • Ran discovery and the initial design, then a G-Cloud procurement for a proof of concept.
  • Led the solution design: a highly available AWS platform in two availability zones, securely linked to the regulator's network by Direct Connect, with dual mobile networks so each site connects to the best available signal. It was the first time either migrated system had run in the public cloud.
  • Wrote the five-year business case and secured approval for the live service.
  • Ran the end-to-end procurement for three services (AWS managed service and SIP trunk via G-Cloud, mobile communications via OJEU) and developed the contracts.
  • Wrote the service designs for the parent department and the telemetry team, designed their ITSM tool and core ITIL processes, and led the business change with roadshows and training across England.

The outcome

  • Over 900 sites migrated, with the service staying resilient throughout rollout and no single point of failure on communications.
  • Total project value over £5m, with a projected yearly saving of over 30%.
  • The telemetry team moved from ad hoc support to ITIL-based service delivery.

What this shows

Prove one step, then scale. The same approach takes AI from prototype to production.
